Get hands-on with the reef for a lasting impact. An outdoor service-focused activity where every student can learn about marine conservation and build a connection with their future.
Life-time behavior change
Why should we care about using a single-use plastic cup? Experiencing first-hand how disposable plastics pollute our oceans, offers a fresh perspective and allows students to reflect on their daily habits through learning about the ocean and coral reefs.
Hands-on practice
Witnessing the positive effects of their efforts on the environment and local communities can be very rewarding. Engaging in coral reef restoration activities inspires students to go explore environmental practices in a real-world setting.
Get to know the ecosystem
Explore ecological and scientific aspects of the oceanic ecosystem, including the coral reef and its interactions with other marine species and their overall impact on the environment. Learn about documenting and monitoring methods.
DIVING:
BEYOND A SIMPLE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY
Team spirit
Diving requires mutual trust and reliance on your dive teammates (called dive buddies), which helps students develop a sense of responsibility and dependability.
Knowing they can be relied upon and count on others can enhance their self-assurance and self-esteem.
Resilience
Breathing underwater and experiencing zero-gravity provides students with the chance to acquire new knowledge and skills and adjust to unfamiliar environments. It sets them on an internal journey of adaptation, increasing resilience when dealing with changes in their immediate surroundings.
Mindfulness
The act of breathing slowly and deeply underwater can have a calming effect similar to meditation or active breath work, helping manage the response to anxiety and stress. Diving also requires focus, concentration and awareness of the surroundings, which promotes mindfulness.
Coral Workshop participant
Young people's curiosity knows no boundaries, and all it takes is a little spark to ignite the flame. At Livingseas, we offer a multitude of experiential learning opportunities, interactive and collaborative, tailor-made to students' needs.
THE CORE PROGRAM
The practical part of the Coral Workshop focuses on learning how to restore a reef by applying a combination of different restoration methods: Direct transplantation and coral gardening as well as substrate addition through green engineering.
A very hands-on diving activity where participants can dive to plant corals and perform much-needed maintenance on the existing reef restoration site in Padangbai.
The activity is focused on practical application of direct transplantation, coral gardening, substrate addition and substrate manipulation (algae removal).
Coral Planting and Maintenance is an offshore, underwater program and can be tailor-made for non-divers.
These two courses provide participants with a detailed look at coral and fish species in/out of the classroom.
Courses can be booked seperately.
Beach cleanups are important because they protect marine life (small items like plastic fragments can be washed back out to sea during high tide and interact with marine life) and raise awareness about litter and plastic pollution.
Exploring the underwater world allows students to get close to the creatures that thrive in the oceans. It will foster empathy for something that has previously been unknown to them.
Diving or snorkeling requires good full-body coordination and spatial awareness. Learning these new skills provides students with a fresh perspective on life beneath the surface.
All educational programs are designed, offered and run by Livingseas Asia, a dive center specialised in the restoration of marine ecosystems.
