Coral reefs play an important role in marine life, and the importance of coral ecosystems is vital to all life:
They are a source of food for millions, they protect coastlines from storms and erosion, and provide habitat, spawning and nursery grounds for economically important fish species. This ecosystem can provide jobs and income for local economies as well, from fishing, recreation, and tourism.
Corals are the building blocks of our ocean, and with the destruction of reefs, our entire ecosystem is at risk. Help us rebalance and rebuild coral reefs, one reef star at a time.
THE LIVINGSEAS CORAL RESTORATION PROJECT IN PADANGBAI, BALI
Oceans are home to a wide variety of creatures, but they all have their roots in coral reefs. Corals are the foundation of life underwater. If there are no corals, there are no fish. Time to do something!
OUR WORK - how it all started
As active divers and diving instructors, we understood the importance of corals for the ocean and its marine biodiversity. So we got up, packed our bags, got on the boat and did something! The Livingseas Coral Restoration Site was born! Today, our reef is the second largest of its kind in Indonesia and the largest restored coral reef in Bali. Our Coral Restoration Team consists mostly of young adolescents from the community who actively work on planting and maintaining the reef, giving them new perspectives on sustainability and work.
OUR GOAL - what drives us
By building a 5-hectare coral reef in Bali, in Padang Bai, we are not only giving back to the ocean and restoring the lost marine habitat and biodiversity in this area, but also contributing to the local communities who depend on this reef for their livelihoods and tourism. With the involvement of the local population, we are rebuilding a complete marine ecosystem that previously consisted only of coral rubble and resembled a desert. Our goal is to make the importance of the reef more transparent in order to achieve a long-term and sustainable impact for future generations.
OUR APPROACH - MARRS Reef Star
The MARRS Reef Star structure is a hexagonal steel structure coated with resin and sand that serves as an artificial substrate for up to 18 coral fragments.
We have had great success with this method at our site, and the modularity of the structure itself has given us more flexibility in placement.
The Reef Star structures are anchored close together on the seabed to maximize coral density. This density is important for the rapid colonization of marine biodiversity.
The approx. 10 cm coral fragments are then attached to the Reef Star and grow firmly to the structures in approx. six months. After approx. 2 years of maintenance and upkeep, the metal structure is no longer visible, a reef has been created and forms a shelter for life!
OUR IMPACT
Our Livingseas Coral Restoration Site in Bali began in 2019 with the goal of restoring a marine ecosystem that was once barren. Thanks to our supporters, we have witnessed significant growth every month, transforming the landscape into a thriving ecosystem. We remain committed to restoring and protecting marine ecosystems and are proud of our progress so far. Our work has led to a rapid increase in underwater life, demonstrating the effectiveness of our restoration techniques.
