WASTE
MANAGEMENT
EVERY MINUTE IN BALI AN ENTIRE TRUCKLOAD OF WASTE ENDS UP IN THE OCEAN, VIA RIVERS, SHIPS AND INDISCRIMINATE DUMPING.
Indonesia produces an estimated 7.8 million tons of plastic waste per year, making it one of the largest plastic waste producers in the world. Officials estimate only about 10% of plastic waste is recycled. There are only 1,300 recycling stations in the country which can properly utilize plastic - none of them are in Bali! Garbage here is still dumped in any available location, sorted in small garbage stations and burned in heavily polluting ovens.
FIXING THE ISSUES AT THE SOURCE.
In our waste management project for Padang Bai, we are working together with international partners like Rotary Germany, #EndPlasticSoup and Technicians without borders to develop a sustainable waste logistics system.
OUR APPROACH
In cooperation with the mayor's office and the religious leader of the village, we work on three levels:
Level 1
One of the first steps in implementing sustainable waste management is to establish a collections system. Collecting the waste before it can start to pile up allows each household and business to effectively dispose of their trash quickly so that they don’t feel the need to indiscriminately dump it elsewhere.
Each household in the village is provided with different bags for different types of trash, which are then sorted automatically, allowing for more efficient processing at the waste collection center.
Level 2
Scale up the local waste collection center as a fully functional base for waste logistics. Construction of sorting stations so that the waste brought in can be separated and processed more effectively and quickly, including a washing plant for recyclable waste.
A newly built high-performance incinerator processes the residual waste. This reduces the emission of pollutants by utilizing high incineration temperatures, which is friendlier to people and the environment.
Level 3
Educate households through our Fellowship program to pre-sort their trash, separating it into plastic, paper, dry organic waste and residual waste. In cooperation with the village administration, educational meetings are held in each district to explain the new waste logistics. Events in schools give younger children an idea of why waste is a problem and what they can do about it. Livingseas Foundation does this educational work by involving local youth in our Fellowship programs - education by locals for locals!
